“We’d been farming at Hoanga, east of Dargaville, for nearly 40 years, with Roy Mathews managing the farm for the last 13 years. It was the right time to sell the farm, but it was never going to be easy parting with the herd.

“Colleen reared all the calves which were weaned at 100kg. Guided by our trusted advisor, Frank Gudgeon, we invested in genetics and fed and cared for the cows. The herd was dried off early in March 2021, in readiness for the sale, and averaged 430kg per cow so that tells you how good they were.

“The sale attracted a lot of interest and all 221 cattle were sold for more than we’d hoped – with cows going as far afield as Rotorua and Morrinsville.
