First South Island online stock auction attracts buyers from across NZ

The first stock sale to be held in the South Island, featuring a hybrid auction platform which combines online and yard purchases, attracted buyers from across New Zealand.

Held at Temuka on 13 October, the NZ Farmers Livestock single vendor sale from the Black and White Cow Co of Hereford/Friesian cattle, realized above market prices for around 370 Hereford/Friesian mixed age cattle.

NZ Farmers Livestock’s South Island Regional Manager, Regan Laughton, said the majority of cattle were sold to online bidders reflecting that this new option is finding favour onfarm.

“At peak times of the year the ability to purchase stock online, from a platform that provides a real-time experience, saves farmers hours of time on the road. The proof of that statement is evident in online attendance at this sale which exceeded ringside.

“One of the big attractions of this sale was that the cattle were from a closed herd and came forward in good condition.”

Regan Laughton said cattle were sold to farmers from Hawkes Bay, Waikato, Oamaru and the South Island.

“The fact that this was the first hybrid auction in the South Island attracted a large audience – farmers watching proceedings – so we are confident that participation will only increase in the future.”

Regan Laughton said NZ Farmers Livestock’s hybrid auction platform will be a feature of future South Island on-farm and single vendor sales.
